Why is My Car Stalling?

You use your car practically every day of your life, and you depend on it to get you to and from work, to pick your kids up from school, and to go to the grocery store. But what happens when your car’s engine stalls and your routine is thrown out of whack?

Car Stalling - Frederick Auto Repair

If this has ever happened to you then you know how annoying it can be. Here at Ken’s Automotive & Transmissions, we’ve had many customers come in with vehicles that were stalling, so it’s an issue that we’re familiar with. We wanted to take some time today to talk about why engines stall, and what can be done about it.

A Problem With Your Fuel System

No matter the reason, if your engine isn’t getting the proper fuel and the proper amount of fuel it needs, then it’s not going to be able to start. The three most common problems here are having bad fuel, too little fuel, or too much fuel. If the gas you put in your vehicle is of poor quality, then it makes the engine’s combustion process less efficient which can cause misfires and can cause your engine to stall.

If you don’t have enough fuel in your tank, then your fuel pump can’t deliver fuel to the engine and the engine can’t create enough combustion to keep running. Similarly, if too much fuel is being pumped into your engine, then your spark plugs could get wet and will be unable to ignite the fuel in the cylinder. This causes misfires and causes your engine to stall.

An Issue With Timing

One of the most important parts of your engine is the timing belt/chain, which synchronizes all of the different parts of the engine so that it can run efficiently and smoothly. If your timing is off by even just a little bit, it can throw everything off and can cause your engine to stall. Not only can it cause your engine to stall, but it can also cause costly internal damage, so you’re best off consulting with a professional Maryland engine repair specialist.

Electrical Problems

Most modern vehicles come with modules that are responsible for everything from the heater and A/C to control of the engine. Nearly every aspect of modern vehicles is controlled by these modules, which are basically little computers. If any of these modules are damaged, or if any of the wiring becomes loose, it can throw the entire system off and can cause your engine to stall.
